The definition of the word "garden" varies. It includes "landscape garden", "park", "water garden" etc. We chose the suitable expression on each occasion.
I define a garden as a space which is given and created, "a space where the cultural background and esthetic sensitivity of the owner and the creator are reflected" and "a space which transcends time".
A garden isn't created for nature apprehension nor for displaying its materials. Its purpose is expressed clearly by the garden craftsmanÕs skill and intuition. The tools what he uses are a part of his body, and his head is a draft itself. Is he a designer? An operating technician? Or an artist? A garden craftsman is a creator and he is a specialist of his own field.
The government office succeeded in regimentation of various kinds of work during the period of the industrial development, and the consciencious craftsmen were excluded. As a result, the gardens of the public facilities and parks near us are all the same. Now civil engineering firms execute the work of the gardening firms.
Consequently, the Japanese gardening industry has been divided into several categories: garden engineering works, construction management, agricultural management etc. The gardening specialists who are engaged in garden engineering do not need his techniques or sensitivity anymore because there is no place for them to express their subtle sensitivity. The craftsmanship is disappearing and it is inevitable for gardening engineers to lose their skill and sensitivity. It is a disappointing regression.
The craftsmenÕs world isn't very well known. Craftsmen exchange their information mostly about who is doing what work and where. Although you might think that it would be difficult to receive consultation about the garden, actually it is not. Please try to find a suitable gardener for your garden.
You will surely meet him/her soon.
